NetVet and Electronic Zoo: Pigs Page

Internet Old-timer Ken Boschert, a veterinarian and computer aficionado at the Washington University School of Medicine developed the Electronic Zoo and NetVet way back in the infancy of the Web in 1993. "At that time, gopher and WWW were quite young and nobody else had put together a central resource for veterinary or animal information," Ken says. "I knew how to do it and filled the information gap." NetVet and the Electronic Zoo have grown to be one of the best sites on the Web and is a 1995 Global Network Navigator "Best of the Net" nominee. Ken estimates that the site receives over 200,000 hits per week. It's no wonder. The site offers the net surfer attractive graphics and an easy-to-navigate interface. The site provides links to a plethora of animal-related resources on the Net. Ken's page on pigs lists over 50 pig links.

Virtual LibraryWWW Virtual Library on Livestock: Swine Resources

CERN's Virtual Library on Livestock is a new directory that Larry Burditt of Oklahoma State University established in May of 1995. Even though it's been up only a few months, the site is getting 1,000 hits a week and that number is rapidly growing. "My goal is to provide a central site with listings to livestock information all over the world," says Larry who is an animal scientist working as a systems analyst for OSU's Department of Animal Sciences. "Because of the wide variety of ways that information has been made available on the Internet it's not always easy to locate the individual pieces of information. The library provides a common layout for people and hopefully makes it much easier to find information." Larry's page on swine resources lists over 40 sites including links to many online documents such as the Pork Industry Handbook. The livestock library is an offspring of CERN's Virtual Library on Agriculture which itself is an offspring of CERN's Virtual Library on everything.
